The Month of Tourmaline (and Opal)
Happy October, Artelle friends and readers!
My how the months are flying by. It’s officially fall - a time when plenty of changes are manifesting. Change is welcome here! In fact, it’s encouraged. Evolving is a natural part of life and art. That’s why we’re thrilled to talk about the latest birthstone shift. October is a bit special in that it carries two major gemstone representatives - Tourmaline and Opal. While we’re partial to the radiant Opal, we’ll dive into some cool factors of both stones.
Opal will come in a later blog post this month (good things are worth waiting for, right?), so for now let’s talk about Tourmaline.
The Tourmaline takes its name from the Singhalese (a particular group of persons originally from Northern India) phrase "tura mali," meaning "stone mixed with vibrant colors." This stone does tend to be popular in part because it comes in a wide variety of colors - sometimes even multi-colored! So it’s suited to all different tastes. Tourmalines are notorious for completely changing color in different light. Pretty magical stuff.
So what are this intriguing stone’s benefits? First and foremost, Tourmalines can help detoxify the body. That’s right - they can actually positively affect the nervous system and the organs and tissues of the body. How the heck do they do this? Through their capacity to generate their own heat, of course! This ability to self-produce an electrical charge makes the Tourmaline one of the only minerals that can emit far infrared heat and negative ions. FIRs (Far Infrared Rays) and negative ions gently heal, soothe, stimulate and detox the physical body and the mind. Amazing to say the least.
Here are some fine reasons to get a hold of a little Tourmaline in your life:
- You’re looking to detox some area/s of your body.
- You’re an athlete looking to increase your strength and ability to recover post-workout.
- A boost in demeanor and mood is something you’re seeking. (The Tourmaline can act as an antidepressant of sorts.)
- Protection is important to you.
- You could use some general mind/body healing.
Even though the Tourmaline has various general properties, each color carries its own healing abilities.
This is the color of the heart chakra, which is to say that it can help infuse spiritual love, compassion, kindness, and gentleness as we move through changes in our days.
Connected to the physical heart, this color helps channel energy into the center of one’s body, creating greater overall harmony and balance within the body and mind.
Known as “the stone of the perfect heart” - this color accesses both the physical and spiritual heart energies. It can help heal the emotional body and revitalize passion and joy.
A crystal of spirit and peace. This color promotes healing through opening up and dealing with past wounds. It gets to the root of all things in the body.
Used primarily as a stone of protection, it not only guards against external radiation and environmental toxins - it also helps purify and neutralize our own internal negative thoughts, turning them into positive, productive energy.
Fun fact: Unlike other gemstones, Tourmalines have three-sided prisms and vertical striations (patterned markings in the stone). They’re considered to create strong channels of energy for purification and protection.
How can you wear this fine stone? Essentially any way you want! We’d definitely suggest wearing the pinks and reds near the heart, as you may have already gathered. A couple of options include our infamous Snowflake Pendant and the classic/modern mix pendant Diana
Green Tourmaline is plentiful in our collection as well - which is perfect, since it appeals to all as a centering stone of overall balance and harmony. Try the soothing ring that is Rachael or the Green Goddess at your neckline. There’s also the stunning Gina Rose - a modern twist on a vintage piece of artwork.
With all of these options and all of its wonderful benefits, you really can’t go wrong with a beautiful Tourmaline piece. But if you’re ever wavering, please don’t hesitate to consult us, ask us questions, or tell us your thoughts!
Until next week, keep enjoying everything nature has to offer us
